Greenough Regional Prison is the primary custodial facility for the Midwest region of Western Australia. Located in Narngulu — a suburb of Geraldton, approximately 420 kilometres north of Perth — the prison manages sentenced and remand prisoners drawn from a catchment area extending from Exmouth in the north to Moora in the south, and east as far as Wiluna. It is a multi-classification facility, holding minimum, medium, and maximum security prisoners, with maximum security reserved for those on remand.
Background and Operations
Greenough Regional Prison was commissioned in 1984, initially as a minimum-security facility. It was upgraded to medium-security in 1990, and a minimum-security annex was added in 1996. The prison holds both men and women — sentenced and on remand — with a dedicated women’s precinct and a minimum-security area housing male prisoners at the front of the facility. A high proportion of prisoners are Aboriginal, reflecting the demographics of the Midwest region.
The prison’s operational focus is on prison industries. It produces approximately 5,000 meals per week and processes around 10,000 kilograms of laundry weekly. Sentenced prisoners in minimum security participate in structured work programs as part of their daily routine.
The facility has experienced significant disruption in recent years. A serious riot in July 2018 caused extensive damage requiring substantial repairs. Cyclone Seroja struck the prison in April 2021, causing further disruption. Overcrowding has been a recurring concern raised in independent inspection reports over the years.
Visiting a Prisoner
All visits are by appointment only and must be booked at least 24 hours in advance. A maximum of three adults may attend at one time, with no more than six individuals per visit total. Visits are not available on Good Friday or Christmas Day. Visitors are subject to search on entry, including the possible use of drug detection dogs. Strict penalties apply for any attempt to bring contraband into the facility.
Depositing Money for a Prisoner
Money can be deposited into a prisoner’s account online, by money order posted to PO Box 4108, Geraldton WA 6530 (include the prisoner’s full name), or by cash or EFTPOS at the prison’s Cashier Office during business hours. You must be a registered visitor to deposit funds.
