About the Centre

Boronia Pre-Release Centre for Women is Western Australia’s only dedicated pre-release facility for women. It opened in May 2004 and is located in the Perth suburb of Bentley. The centre accommodates up to 95 minimum-security female prisoners and operates on a community-style model designed to bridge the gap between custody and life outside prison.

Women are transferred to Boronia from Bandyup Women’s Prison once they have achieved a minimum-security classification. The centre is not a standard prison environment — it is structured around reintegration, with residents taking part in vocational training, work placements with local businesses and not-for-profit organisations, and programs addressing the specific needs of women in the justice system. Traineeships are available in areas including hospitality, horticulture, retail operations, and asset management.

Boronia also has provisions for children to live with their mothers up to the age of four, and for older children up to the age of 12 to have regular extended day and overnight stays — a recognition that the impact of a parent’s imprisonment on children is a significant factor in both wellbeing and reoffending risk.

Why Legal Advice Still Matters at This Stage

Being held at Boronia does not mean all legal matters are resolved. For many women at this stage of their sentence, several issues may still require urgent attention from a lawyer.

Parole and Early Release

Eligibility for parole is determined by the Prisoners Review Board, not the prison. A lawyer can assist in preparing a parole application, ensuring the supporting material is properly presented and that any factors relevant to the Board’s assessment — including rehabilitation progress, housing arrangements, employment prospects, and family circumstances — are clearly articulated. A poorly prepared application can result in parole being deferred, extending time in custody unnecessarily.

Appeals Against Conviction or Sentence

Time limits for lodging appeals are strict and begin running from the date of sentencing, not from the date of transfer to a facility like Boronia. If there are grounds to challenge a conviction or argue that the sentence imposed was manifestly excessive, those options need to be explored promptly. Delay risks those rights being permanently lost.

Outstanding Charges or Matters

Some women at Boronia may have unresolved charges, fines, or other legal matters that were not dealt with at the time of sentencing. Unresolved fines can affect release conditions and post-release obligations. A lawyer can identify and address these before they create complications at the point of release.

Post-Release Legal Obligations

Release from Boronia is typically subject to conditions — parole conditions, reporting requirements, or other obligations. Breaching those conditions, even unintentionally, can result in return to custody. Understanding exactly what is required before release, and having legal advice on how to manage those obligations, is something a lawyer can assist with in advance.
