About the Prison
Albany Regional Prison is a male prison managed by the Western Australia Department of Justice. It is the only maximum-security prison outside the Perth metropolitan area, which gives it a distinct role within the WA corrective services system — it operates across all security classifications, holding maximum, medium, and minimum-security prisoners. With a current capacity of 310 beds, it serves as an overflow facility for Perth’s maximum-security male prisons and provides an additional management option when the metropolitan estate is under pressure.
The prison has a particular focus on managing Aboriginal prisoners, foreign national prisoners, and long-term prisoners. It also administers the nearby Pardelup and Walpole work camps, to which eligible lower-security prisoners may be transferred.
If Someone You Know Is Held at Albany Regional Prison
The most common reason family members or friends search for Albany Regional Prison is that someone they know has been remanded in custody, sentenced, or transferred there from another facility. In each of these situations, the legal position of the person in custody warrants attention — and often action.
Remand Prisoners
A person on remand at Albany Regional Prison has not been convicted and is presumed innocent. Remand does not mean the matter is resolved — it means a bail application was either not made, was refused, or was not properly argued. A lawyer can apply to have bail reconsidered, particularly where circumstances have changed since the original application or where the bail decision was made without adequate legal representation. Spending weeks or months on remand while awaiting trial carries serious personal and professional consequences, and challenging it promptly is worth pursuing in most cases.
Sentenced Prisoners
For those already sentenced and held at Albany, ongoing legal matters may still require attention. Appeals against conviction or sentence can be lodged within specific time limits — missing those windows can permanently foreclose options that might otherwise have been available. Parole eligibility, the conditions of release, and the management of any outstanding matters are also areas where legal advice can make a practical difference.
